20世紀における農業は人口増加に対応すべく作物の収量を増大させることに重きが置かれてきましたが、近年は安全性や栄養価といった質が注目されるようになりました。植物の重金属集積機構の研究を基礎として、人間に不足しがちな鉄や亜鉛などの重金属を強化し、好ましくないカドミウムなどの重金属の集積を抑えた高付加価値作物を創造することが可能だと考えられます。
